4 out of 5 stars Theatrical progrock, heavily influenced by King Crimson ..., February 10, 2003
Reviewer: Lethe (see more about me) from Milan, Italy
This is a french album,in the vein of some theatrical prog rock stuff, nevertheless it's also heavily influenced by King Crimson ...well actually it's far away from the most boring parts of bands such as for example Art Zoyd and the majority of the Zeuhl school, that is the master school of dissonances!! Their darkest parts instead resemble the sound of a belgian group called Univers Zero or something more dark, from one of the several styles by After Crying !!
There are anyway very interesting and quite original symphonic passages too, within this debut album dated 1979 ... besides some interesting guitar lines and a couple of keyboards as well complete the music harmony !! Of course there is also some stuff here reminding me of Ange, but without the mellow sound of such classic prog french ensemble. The dissonances are bearable, however being far away from the brainstorm regarding some Zehul music;while it is sure, coming back to this debut album by Arachnoid,it's one of the most adventurous of the late 70's prog scene, showing the existence of european bands inspired by King Crimson, whose music efforts are not merely derivative !!

Recommended!! Nevertheless before this one buy the l.p."Symphony" by Clearlight; some stuff by Magma (the less difficult albums to bear);"Eros" by Dun(by using your patience!!), Pulsar's "Strands of the future" and "Halloween", plus some stuff from Univer Zero; I like to add also the interesting l.p. "Picture", by the swiss band Island;this album is not merely derivative and, despite of this latter maintaining all the 70's prog references -even though without keyboards and as referred to V.D.G.G and ELP - is always vivid...!!)

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, July 3, 2001
Reviewer: youngchool choe (see more about me)
First of all, the first song is amazing! Among french bands, only the great Pulsar (try Halloween!) can be a match. Very dark, intense. Many people tend to compare them to King Crimson. Maybe they are right, but I think Arachnoid is MUCH more 'enjoyable' than 'Red' period KC. Yes, it is e.n.j.o.y.a.b.l.e or I may say 'beautiful'. It's a real pity that a band like this couldn't get a fame. I 'd like give them full 5 stars without any hesitation. Strongly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars Energetic and Theatrical Prog Rock from France, April 19, 2001
Reviewer: A music fan from Silicon Valley, CA USA
Many prog fans really love this album, but I think it's only OK. Aside from the outstanding opening track (the quiet section where a little girl recites several lines in French is just fantastic!), I find it all kind of undistinguished and unmemorable. The style is very theatrical (like Ange or Mona Lisa), with a very dramatic vocalist who shouts/recites as much as he sings, but for the most part, I just don't think it's quite on the same level as other French bands that did this sort of thing. Still, the first track is good enough that I'm keeping the disk. This CD re-release of the original vinyl LP from the 70s includes a number of live bonus tracks (mediocre sound quality, although hardcore fans are sure to appreciate them).
